$13M Gift to Advance Business and Professional Studies
An anonymous gift of $13 million – the largest private donation in Rutgers' history – will help the university launch a long-term initiative to develop its Livingston Campus in Piscataway as a center for business and professional studies. Of the total donation, $10 million will support construction of a new building for the Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick on the Livingston Campus. The remaining $3 million will be used to establish the Bennett L. Smith Endowed Chair in Business and Natural Resources.
Groundbreaking for Campus Solar Energy Facility
Described as the largest campus solar energy facility in the nation, the university broke ground for the construction of a seven-acre solar energy facility on the Livingston campus this month. Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick was joined by commissioners of the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities (BPU) and other university officials to break ground for this solar 'farm' that will generate approximately 10 percent of the electrical demand of the Livingston Campus and reduce the university’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 1,200 tons per year. Photovoltaic solar energy, which converts sunlight into electricity, is one of the cleanest renewable energy sources.
Sierra Leone President speaks at Rutgers
Rutgers played host to Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, the first democratically elected president of Sierra Leone since its civil war, who spoke before a crowd of more than 500 Sierra Leoneans, local legislators and administrators, and Rutgers students and faculty members on September 21 at the Rutgers Student Center. Koroma, in his first public address in the United States, which took place on the eve of his visit to the United Nations, said that Sierra Leone has made great progress since its civil war, but still has a long road ahead of it. Members of the local Sierra Leonean community approached Rutgers to host President Koroma to provide a forum for him to speak with his constituents and supporters in the area. More than 7 percent of nearby Franklin Township's population is from Sierra Leone and its Mayor David Levine presented Koroma with a proclamation and District 17 Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula presented a joint resolution in honor the President Koroma's visit.
New Research Center Launched
The new Center for Urban Entrepreneurship & Economic Development at the Rutgers Business School has been launched on the Newark campus and will be officially inaugurated on October 7. The first of its kind in the nation, the center represents a major public-private partnership among city and state officials, big business, community agencies, entrepreneurs, and academics whose ultimate goals are to transform the landscape of the state’s cities, to create wealth in urban communities, and to serve as a model for other urban universities. The leadership of a new Rutgers Business School business research center has a vision of Newark as a 24-hour hub, a venue for arts, dining, entertainment, and retail businesses surrounding the Newark campus of the state university and the launching of the new center helps to provide the tools to make that vision a reality.
