Rutgers sets fundraising record
Rutgers University set a record with its $103 million in private giving in the 2006-07 fiscal year, a 31 percent increase from the previous fiscal year ending in June 2006. Nearly $60 million came in gifts of $500,000 or more but the record setting achievement was fueled in part by a 42 percent jump in donations from individuals. According to Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick, "The vast majority of these funds will be allocated toward enhancing our academic programs." Private gift support also included more than $45 million from corporations and foundations, including Bank of America and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, while bequests from 80 estates totaled more than $25 million.

Two grants fornuclear threat detection
Two grants, totaling $2.3 million over 4 years for research on detecting smuggled nuclear materials, has been awarded to the university by the National Science Foundation (NSF), in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Coordinating the research is the Rutgers Center for Dynamic Data Analysis (DyDAn), in collaboration with the School of Information and Library Studies (SCILS) and the Rutgers Center for Operations Research (RUTCOR). The work will define mathematical principles for how to lay out sensor networks and accurately interpret the vast amounts of data they will capture. The work aims to thwart terrorists from using such materials to develop "dirty bombs" or environmental contaminants that could sicken large segments of the population and paralyze commerce.

NIH supports research of Rutgers Camden professor
The National Institute on Drug Abuse at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a highly prestigious Career Development Award to Naomi Marmorstein, an associate professor of psychology at Rutgers–Camden. The $649,503 grant will fund Marmorstein's continuing examination of links between children's mental health problems and alcohol, nicotine, and illegal drug use over time. According to the NIH, Marmorstein's award is part of an integrated program designed to foster the development of outstanding scientists and enable them to expand their potential to make important scientific contributions.
