Rutgers Announces Initiative to Fight Hunger
University President Richard L. McCormick launched Rutgers Against Hunger (RAH), a universitywide initiative to help feed New Jersey's hungry through a number of activities, including food drives, nutrition education and research. In this effort, the university will enlist students, faculty, staff, alumni and the concerned public in efforts to create an ongoing program that will stock food banks; provide consumer education on nutrition, food shopping and preparation; and conduct research toward improving food production, packaging and distribution.

College of Nursing Awarded Kirby Grant
Rutgers College of Nursing has been the recipient of a $750,000 grant from the F.M. Kirby Foundation of Morristown, N.J., to support the education of 10 doctoral fellows who are New Jersey residents. Rutgers College of Nursing was the first to introduce a doctoral program in nursing in New Jersey. In addition, the grant will fund the work of a faculty member who is committed to teaching, research and service. The F.M. Kirby Foundation is a family foundation whose grantees are largely in geographic areas of particular interest to five generations of Kirby family members and, in many cases, are organizations with which family members have been associated.

Professor Wins National Book Award
Newark History Professor Annette Gordon-Reed has won the 2008 National Book Award for non-fiction for her landmark history of an American slave family, The Hemingses of Monticello, published in September 2008 by W.W. Norton. According to Gordon, the book is about far more than a relationship between Thomas Jefferson and his house slave Sally, and is "a window into the world of slavery, an illumination of our past, a past that brought us to where we are today." The National Book Foundation, which recognizes achievements in four genres: Fiction, Nonfiction, Poetry, and Young People's Literature, announced the award at its annual ceremony in New York City earlier this month.

Camden Initiates Jumpstart Program for Preschoolers
Rutgers Camden has launched New Jersey's first Jumpstart Corps, a component of the AmeriCorps national service program, in which rigorously trained tutors work closely with very young children for an entire school year. Focusing on language, literacy, and social skills, a group of 40 Rutgers–Camden student volunteers began meeting with preschool age students at the LEAP Academy University Charter School on October 29. The intent of the program is to bring at-risk preschool children and college students together through one-and-one mentoring relationships to build language, literacy, and social skills. Jumpstart was founded at Yale University in 1993 and operates at nearly 70 other colleges and universities nationwide. Rutgers–Camden is the first New Jersey university to host a Jumpstart program.
