Congratulations Rutgers Class of 2008!
There were congratulations and sage advice as Rutgers held its university-wide commencement on May 21 on the historic Voorhees Mall on the College Avenue Campus. Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick conferred over 10,850 academic degrees at commencement exercises which included representatives from all 27 degree-granting units and their guests. Delivering the keynote address and receiving an honorary Doctor of Letters degree was Gwen Ifill, moderator and managing editor of PBS’
Washington Week and a senior correspondent for
The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. Ifill served as the 2007 Senator Wynona Lipman Chair in Women’s Political Leadership at Rutgers’ Center for American Women and Politics.
Gates Scholars honored on Senate floor
The Senate floor was the venue for a capitol honor for Rutgers' four Gates Cambridge Scholarship winners held May 15 during Rutgers Day in Trenton activities at the State House. Governor Jon S. Corzine presented gubernatorial proclamations to the four New Jersey natives: Michael Hayoun of Margate; Suzanne Pilaar of Haledon; Ronn Friedlander of Cranford; and Brian Spatocco of Sewell. State Senators Tom Kean Jr., Fred Madden, Ray Lesniak and Christopher "Kip" Bateman hosted the scholars and about 100 guests in the Senate chambers and presented them with legislative resolutions. Rutgers and Harvard are the only American universities with four of the prestigious Gates award winners this year.
