Wireless Lab Awarded Prize for Technological Innovation
Rutgers Wireless Information Networking Laboratory (WINLAB) recently won the fourth annual Alexander Schwarzkopf Prize for Technological Innovation for establishing a unique facility for testing new mobile computing and communications technologies. The facility, known as the ORBIT Open Access Radio Grid Testbed, is located on the New Brunswick campus and is the world’s largest open, programmable wireless network facility for use by academic and industry researchers worldwide. The Prize was awarded by the I/UCRC Association, a voluntary, independent organization of past and present members of the National Science Foundation’s Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC) program and is named for the founder of the I/UCRC program, Dr. Alexander Schwarzkopf.
Rutgers Professor Receives Top International Honor
Rutgers School of Business Camden professor Julie E. Kendall was recently inducted as a Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), a cross-disciplinary international professional association dedicated to advancing the science and practice of decision-making. With her induction, Kendall become only the second educator at a New Jersey university and only the ninth woman to receive this coveted international honor, considered among the highest for scholars in this field. She is one of only 104 scholars worldwide to be granted this distinction, which honors exceptional contributions to the theory and practice of decision sciences, which includes operations management, information systems, and ecommerce. Rutgers is the only New Jersey university represented on the Decision Sciences Institute’s Fellowship roster, which also includes such schools as Harvard, Stanford, Duke, and Yale.
Renowned Professor Appointed to State Board of Education
International expert in literacy education and Professor of Education at the Rutgers Graduate School of Education (GSE), Dorothy S. Strickland, has been appointed to the New Jersey State Board of Education. An expert on the achievement gap and reading education, Strickland was sworn into office on January 9th in Trenton. The New Jersey Board of Education has 13 members who are appointed by the Governor with the advice and consent of the New Jersey State Senate, which approved Strickland’s appointment on January 8. Board members serve without compensation for six-year terms.
Business School Creates New Undergraduate Course
In response to heavy demand, Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick created a new undergraduate course entitled
Love and Money: Valuable Lessons for Life. Supported by a three-year commitment from Boardroom Inc., publisher of America’s largest consumer newsletter, Bottom Line/Personal, the new course was designed by Dr. Susan Feinberg, associate professor of Management and Global Business at Rutgers Business School and a widely published economist. The elective course, taught by top-notch faculty, is academically rigorous and is designed to teach students important personal finance and life management skills, through scholarly readings, in-class exercises and presentations by accomplished business professionals. Held on the Newark campus, the course quickly filled to capacity, with more than 227 students registered for the inaugural offering this spring semester.

Black History Month Lecture Series
The Newark campus continues its tradition as host of the Marion Thompson Wright Lecture Series which mark its 28th anniversary on Saturday, February 16, 2008, beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the Paul Robeson Campus Center. The keynote lecture will be given by Dr. Bernice Johnson Reagon, Professor Emeritus of history at American University and a scholar and artist in African American cultural history and music. The lecture series offers a forum for scholars and non-academicians to share their thoughts and exchange ideas, and sustains wide public interest in history, the humanities and life-long learning. Rutgers' Mini-MBA Certificate Program
Spring courses for New Jerseyans older than 50, who want to continue their learning experience and share knowledge with their peers, are being offered by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI-RU) at Rutgers. Register now through February 29 for spring courses which run March 3 through May 9. Founded in 1993, OLLI-RU is a unit of Rutgers’ Division of Continuous Education and Outreach.
