Rutgers gets new Vice President for Public Affairs
Rutgers' Board of Governors this month appointed Jeannine F. LaRue as vice president for public affairs, a senior-level position at the university. LaRue will serve as the chief adviser to President Richard L. McCormick, Rutgers' governing boards and other university leaders on matters involving state, federal and local governments; New Jersey businesses; civic and community groups; and nonprofit organizations. LaRue, whose appointment was effective December 17, was most recently deputy chief of staff to Governor Jon S. Corzine.

Rosenblatt Receives International Award for Research
Marking a stellar career in the fields of parental behavior and parent-young relationship, Rutgers University Emeritus Professor Jay S. Rosenblatt recently received the Senior Investigator Award from the International Society for Developmental Psychobiology (ISDP). Rosenblatt is credited with establishing the theoretical framework for the study of maternal behavior in animals and in recognition of the strength of his contributions to the study of animal behavior, in Jan. 2007 the journal Developmental Psychobiology published a special issue in his honor. Rosenblatt, who joined the Rutgers–Newark faculty in 1959, was director from 1972 to 1989, of the former Institute of Animal Behavior (IAB), which is recognized for having trained numerous researchers who have gone on to become leaders in the field.

Research offers hope for better protection for biomedical devices
Biomedical and microelectronic devices could be better protected thanks to research underway at Rutgers University–Camden that aims to improve the coating of polymers in smoothness and uniformity, no matter how intricate the product. A three-year grant from National Science Foundation (NSF), totaling some $298,785 will allow researchers to continue pinpointing what solvents best interact with polymers, which are used in a variety of industries often as a protective coating from contact lenses to battleships.

Groundbreaking for expanded Livingston Student Center
Rutgers last month broke ground on a 19,000-square-foot addition to the Livingston Student Center, a first step in a nearly $40 million project that also will include the renovation of existing space in the center and construction of a new dining commons on the Livingston Campus. Approximately 15,000 square feet, roughly 40 percent, of the existing space in the student center will be renovated. There hasn't been a major construction project on the Livingston Campus since the completion of the Janice H. Levin Building in 1989. The student center project and new dining commons are expected to be completed by the 2009 fall semester.
